MONROE CENTER - A single engine plane crashed in Monroe Center on Tuesday morning, killing the pilot.
The Monroe Center Fire Department got a call just before 7:30 this morning about a fire on a plane, and that the pilot needed to make an emergency landing. The fire department then lost contact with the pilot, who was coming into Rockford from DeKalb.
A firefighter reported seeing a plume of black smoke shortly after 8 A.M., and neighbors claim to have heard a loud boom. The plane, an experimental, single engine aircraft, came down in a field on Crill Road near I-39 and Highway 72.
The FAA has confirmed that the male pilot was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only occupant.
