Rockford, Illinois- Rockford faces its sixth and seventh homicides of the year Thursday morning- in a double murder.
"I couldn`t believe it," says Richard Hansen, who lives near the home of the victims. "It kind of shocks you, you know?"
Hansen says he`s always felt safe in his neighborhood. "It hasn`t changed a whole lot. People that were here when our kids were little, they were little, too, and grew up together."
But at around 7 a.m. things did change.
Cornetta Brown, 81, and her caretaker Whitney Bryant, 69, were found murdered in Browns home.
Police say it appears they were stabbed.
"They were nice," says neighbor Brittany Gorham. "They were quiet."
Jerry K. Gulley, 49, is under arrest. He has been charged with two counts of first degree murder.
Police say Gulley knew the victims.
"Something like that, you`re gonna have to lock your doors now. I mean, anyone would," says Nolan Kaufman, another of Browns neighbors.
Gulley is being held at the Winnebago County Jail on a $2 million bond.
