(Rockford, Illinois) Homelessness continues to be a topic of concern in the Rockford area, with many local agencies struggling to keep up with the demand.
Tuesday, Congressman Don Manzullo brought a Bush Administration official to learn more about the way Rockford helps the homeless.
Phil Mangano, Executive Director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness toured "Carpenter`s Place", an outreach center for Rockford`s Homeless.
Mangano said the federal government has been trying to help the homeless for 20 years without much progress and adds, "Part of my work here is to listen, to learn, and to disseminate that information and ideas around the country. And there`s a lot to learn here in Rockford."
The Executive Director of Carpenter`s Place Al Barsema says they are helping approximately 300 people a year move away from life on the streets and to a more normal existence.
