Chicago- Former Illinois Governor George Ryan has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison after he was convicted on 22 counts of corruption earlier this year. Ryan`s co-defendant, Larry Warner, a longtime friend and associate, has been sentenced to 41 months in prison. Ryan was found guilty of steering state business to friends and associates in exchange for gifts and vacations. Federal prosecutors were pushing for a sentence of eight to ten years for Ryan. But the former governor`s attorneys wanted a maximum sentence of 30 months, because Ryan is 72 years old and suffers from Crohn`s disease and diabetes. The judge in the case, Rebecca Pallmeyer, postponed a ruling on a request from Ryan`s lawyers for an appeal bond, which would allow Ryan to remain free while he appeals his conviction.
