The Emerald Ash Boer is claiming Rockford's ash tree population. Some eight thousand trees under public jurisdiction have already been infected. The recent infections along with the drought and storm damage have caused the city to increase its contracts with tree services by 250,000 dollars. The city calls this a needed move citing that the more trees that become infected and die, the bigger the hazard they pose to the public.

There's no known way to stop the Emerald Ash Boer, all the city can do is cut down infected trees. In an effort to help replace some of those removed trees the city along with private tree services and the Klehm Arboretum have started a community trees project. They are in part relying on donations to help fund these projects and anyone wishing to donate can contact the Klehm Arboretum
