Demolition on the
TAPCO building is set to begin Wednesday morning. Crews are already removing
asbestos from the building. It won't be
imploded, but rather just traditionally disassembled with a backhoe.
Funds to perform
the demolition are coming from the state. Aldermen and residents are eager for
the eyesore to be gone and ready for new development.
With recent
demolition of the
Rockford's Third
Ward Alderman Doug Mark said "you're starting to see some development
you're starting to see some interest and when that comes positive things happen
and so I think it's going to be great for not only the whole downtown south
main area, but for the entire community and city of Rockford."
The property is
zoned for commercial development. Alderman Mark says the removal will make room
for downtown's new Amtrak Railway Station and possibly a casino.
