Golfers Battle Heat 7/2/12

Most courses are empty during the middle of the day. Play at the Rockford Park District over the past weekend was down by 16%. Many golfers are still turning out, but primarily early in the morning and in the evening. And those golfers who do show up are using carts more often instead of walking the course.
We did find a few golfers in the 98 degree heat Monday who were determined to have a good time while trying to stay cool.
"I'm playing nine holes," said Wally Johnson. "I drink a lot of water and my hat comes in handy."
"We're going to do 18, but we have to get a cart today to get the breeze going a little bit," said golfer Ian Wrightson.
"I took the week off. My wife is in Vegas, so I figured I was going to come out and play regardless of what's going on, so I just took my time, drank a lot of water, and kept on going," said Wayne Burgbard.
The greens, tees and fairways are holding up well at most Park District Courses due to the irrigation, but the rough is brown in spots, and it's quite short which makes the rough less challenging for golfers.
