Former Police Detective Pleads Guilty To Post-Katrina Shootings Cover-Up

(Washington, DC) -- A former New Orleans police detective has pled guilty to helping cover up the fatal shootings of two people by police after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

Jeffrey Lehrmann, who is now a U.S. immigration agent, is the second former member of the New Orleans police force to plead guilty in the case.

He could face up to three years in prison and a 250-thousand-dollar fine.

Lehrmann admitted to creating a report that included false statements by officers involved in the shooting.

It happened on New Orleans' Danziger Bridge several days after Katrina had flooded much of the city.

Police were responding to a fellow officer's call for help who said he thought a group of men on the bridge were armed.

The police opened fire on the group, but investigators found the victims had no weapons.
