Northwest Airlines Pilots Who Overflew Destination Drop License Revocation Appeal
(Washington, DC) -- Two Northwest Airlines pilots who overflew their destination while using personal computers in the cockpit last year won't fight to keep their license to fly.
The FAA has announced a deal in which the two won't contest their license revocation but can reapply for their licenses in ten months instead of the normal 12.
The pilots, Captain Timothy Cheney and First Officer Richard Cole, told investigators they'd become distracted by an airline scheduling system on their laptop computers.
The two only realized they were 150 miles beyond their destination after a flight attendant called asking when they'd be landing.
The crew of Northwest Flight 188 which had left San Diego on October 21st headed to Minneapolis was out of radio contact with controllers for 77 minutes.
Captain Cheney has admitted to putting his 144 passengers "at risk" and was quoted by an FAA safety board as saying "You'll never know how sorry I am."
