Rockford, Illinois-Chad Carpenter is the new head football coach at Rockford Christian High School. He comes from Bristol, Tenneesse.
Carpenter was an assistant coach at Bristol High School from 2005 through 2008. He has also been an assistant football coach at the University of Virginia's College at Wise (NAIA) in Wise, Virginia. And he has been on the staff at Emory and Henry College (NCAA Div. III) in Emory, Virginia.
This will be Carpenter's first head coaching job.
"I'm really excited to be a part of Rockford Christian," said Carpenter in an interview with WTVO. "I think this is a great opportunity to take a program to build on the foundation that's already been here."
Carpenter met with his new players Wednesday morning at Rockford Christian.
"The guys were a little apprehensive at first not knowing me and what to expect," said Carpenter. "But there's also some excitement. We've heard of guys that are coming out (for football) that might not have been out before. The buzz is out there, and we're really excited to get things started here."
Carpenter says his philosophy is built on "building men of character. I think it's important that we build these young men to be men of character in every aspect of life, on the football field and in the classroom, and off the field as well. We use the platform of football to teach them life lessons."
Carpenter says he needs time to evaluate his players before he decides what style of football the Royal Lions will play.
Rockford Christian will move into the Big Northern Conference this fall. It's one of the strongest football conferences in the state.
"I know the tradition of the Big Northern and the reputation that it has is great. We're excited to be a part of it," said Carpenter. "I know there's a lot of great players and coaches. We're going to do the best that we can to be competitive."
Rockford Christian is also in the process of hiring a head boys basketball coach. And the school will also welcome a new Athletic Director in June Ricardo Viera. He has been an Athletic Director at Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina, and an Athletic Director at Liberty High School in Kissimmee, Florida.
