The
three day educational event allowed new members of fire crews from all over the
Stateline to learn vehicle extrication. Today, participants used hand and
hydraulic tools to take part in the extrication challenge. Teams consisting of
one captain and four or five squad members went up against each other. Teachers
from around the country flew in to help teach the workshop.
Harlem-Roscoe
Fire Department's Bill Puckeet explains "what we teach is the basic stuff.
How to crib the car, how to stabilize it so it doesn't move where we can cut
and break glass. Things like that to get to our patients safely."
One
of the lessons stressed is the proper way to use tools without injury to the
patient. Organizers say the event is a way to teach young firefighters how to
better themselves and improve safety.
