SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois
Department of Natural Resources said Thursday that over 2,000 deer in 76
counties have died as a result of a virus called epizootic hemorrhagic disease
or EHD. The virus is deadly for the
animals, but people are not at risk.. It
comes from gnats and causes high fever and severe internal bleeding. There is no vaccine or treatment for the
disease. The department is asking hunters who find sick or dead deer to contact the their nearest IDNR office.
