Shortly after being convicted on 1st degree murder charges yesterday, 54 year-old Byron Adams admitted to prosecutors he broke into Margaret Atherton's home to rape her. Originally, he told police they were a couple and only planned to rob her.
Adams went on to say he forced his way into the victim's home, put a gun to her head, and tied her up. He eventually choked her to death. Adams was arrested six days later. Dixon's Police Chief says he's glad to finally have some closure in the case. "It's a great feeling to put a great case together, to have spoke for her and sought justice for her" says Chief Dan Langloss. "At the same time, it's bittersweet because there's nothing we can do to bring her back."
Adams could be sentenced to the maximum penalty of 60 years in prison.
