ROCKFORD- Rockford police are investigating a police-involved deadly shooting on the city's west side. It happened around 2pm Thursday afternoon in the area of Central and Michigan streets when police responded to a distress call of a man with a gun who may have been suicidal.

Police Chief Chet Epperson told the media that, "Officers responded (and) ... a foot chase ensued, and the suspect we were looking for pulled out a handgun ... and Rockford officers shot and killed this individual ..."  Family members of the victim at the scene say the victim is an 18-year-old African-American man who lives in the area.  The area is closed off while the investigation continues led by investigators from the state crime lab.  A news conference with more details will be held on Friday.

Teachers at the nearby Rockford Area Science Academy have been alerted by the Principal to the shooting and told the victim maybe someone known to students there.  They are encouraging them to refer students to school counselors or administrators.
