DEKALB --Northern Illinois
University President John Peters announced he will step down on June 30th
of next year. Peters made the
announcement during his annual State of the University Address, telling those
assembled, "I can't express in words my
love for this university and its people - for its faculty, staff and students
who every day invigorate and inspire me," Peters told the audience. "We've
shared triumph and tragedy, and in some ways, I feel we've experienced an
entire lifetime together. But a university presidency isn't a lifetime
appointment."
Peters has been President at
NIU since 2000, and marked among his accomplishments his 'Vision 2020' program
for the University, which enacted programs to make NIU one of the top student-centered
public research universities in the Midwest.
NIU was admitted to the prestigious Association of Public and Land-grant
Universities during Peters' tenure.
Peters tenure has also been
marked by large scale expansions of residence halls on campus and the major
renovation of other campus facilities.
