Stateline Eagle Scout shares story of Sex Abuse

Thousands of secret Boy Scout documents were made public Thursday. The files identify scout leaders and volunteers who were banned from the organization over a 20 year time period.

There are six men from Rockford on the list of men associated with allegations of sexual abuse. The website containing these documents is listed below.

Jim Wesseling says he was a member of a Boy Scout troop based in Rockford during the early 1980's. The troop was overseen by the Blackhawk Area Council. Wesseling was 14 years old when he left the troop in 1983. He states in the years before that time he was molested by his Scoutmaster Robert Schindler.

Wesseling states "this is disgusting and unthinkable. Over thirty years of my life I have been living in pain, shame and humiliation."

Wesseling explains "I believe this gentleman, this monster actually, who I was associated with I believe it's well known in the area with the Boy Scouts what he did do." Wesseling now lives out of state.

Boy Scouts of America PR Representative Deron Smith advises anyone who wants to report abuse should call their local council or the national office at (972) 580-2000.

Boy Scouts of America has a process in place called Youth Protection. It's dedicated to preventing sexual abuse of troop members.

Our hearts go out to all the boy scouts who have been sexually abused, they never deserved to be treated so inhumane. Child predators need to be kept far away from kids forever... BUT, an even more powerful danger is when high ranking officials enable, empower, and cover up these crimes against kids. They need to be held accountable for allowing more innocent kids to be sexually abused. It is and was a crime to sexually abuse a child. Child [censored] abuse thrives in secrecy and secret systems that allow it to continue to this day. Keep in mind that child predators rarely have only one victim. So if you have been harmed by anyone in the Boy Scouts, Churches, or any institutional setting, your silence only hurts, and by speaking up, contacting the police, and exposing the truth, there is a chance for healing, and protecting others. Judy Jones, SNAP Midwest Associate Director, USA, 636-433-2511. snapjudy@gmail.com, (SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests,) is the worlds oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 12,000 members. Despite the word priest in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers and increasingly, victims who were assaulted in a wide range of institutional settings like summer camps, athletic programs, Boy Scouts, etc. http://www.snapnetwork.org/
