UPDATED: Rockford's Mr. 4th of July, Joe Marino, says he's feeling better after suffering a heart attack Wednesday. Marino will be released from the hospital this afternoon.

ROCKFORD-- Rockford's Mr. 4th of July, Joe Marino, is recovering from a heart attack he suffered Wednesday. Marino's son tells WROK radio that the 86-year-old is currently undergoing testing at St Anthony Medical Center to determine the damage, and is in good spirits.

Marino created Rockford's 4th of July committee in 1963, and has seen the celebration grow to include hundreds of thousands. Marino also organizes the Holiday Festival of Lights, and we caught up with him preparing Sinnissippi Park for the celebration this past weekend. It's set to begin on November 29th.

A statue honoring Marino's more than 50 years of community service sits on N. Water St.
