DeKalb, Illinois-The job of turning around the NIU basketball program will not be a quick or an easy one. Mark Montgomery knew that when he took over as the Huskies head coach last year.
The Huskies struggled through a 5-26 season last season. The good news is most of the talent from that team returns. Plus six freshmen will join them including two point guards which the Huskies desperately needed.
Those freshmen will play a lot this season along with four sophomores. Montgomery knows they'll make some young mistakes, but he expect to see some positive results on the court and with the team's record.
"We're definitely looking to improve our win total," says Montgomery. "We're looking to get better in practice every day and make sure we're competing for 40 minutes. I think last year the team gave everything they had and our ceiling was only so high."
The Huskies will be quicker this season. They plan to push the tempo and run the floor.
NIU will open its season Friday, November 9th at Nebraska-Omaha.
