WLS-TV CHICAGO: Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, was held without bond Thursday in the murders of her son, Justin Plackowski, 7; and a child she was babysitting, Olivia Dworakowski, 5.
Plackowska allegedly stabbed the children and two dogs to death at a Naperville townhouse Tuesday night in the 800-block of Quin Court. Officials forced entry into the home during a well-being check requested by Olivia's mother, where they found "unimaginable horror."
"Both victims had been stabbed numerous times, and it appeared their throats had been slashed," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said.
Plackowska had superficial wounds, police say, and was taken into custody. Prosecutors say Plackowska originally said her son had been killed by an intruder who got in while she was having a cigarette, but changed her story throughout the questioning.
"She then changed her story and stated that she was really battling the devil inside of the Quin Court address and that the children had evil of them, and she was trying to get the evil, the devil out of them. She changed her story again, and stated that she had in fact stabbed both victims because they were poisoned by society and did not listen like they should have," Berlin said.
She continued to talk to officers as she was transported to the police department, Berlin said. "She ultimately admitted she that had lied to police in earlier statement and stated she was angry with her husband because he was gone most days as an over-the-road trucker, she was left to care for Justin and the house, and she also had to work as a cleaning lady, which she felt was beneath her.
"She told the detectives she thought by killing Justin she would make her husband hurt, the way she hurt in their relationship," Berlin said.
Police found two knives at the crime scene. Police say Plackowska told them the children were jumping on the bed in the master bedroom, so she made them kneel and told them to pray. She told her son, Justin, "he was going to heaven tonight," officials said, and then stabbed him to death. She killed Olivia next, police said, and then the family dogs.
She told police both children pleaded for their lives. Their bodies were found in the master bedroom, officials said.
"There were numerous stab wounds to the victims," Berlin said. Plackowska told police she killed Olivia because the girl saw her murder Justin, Berlin said.
"This is the most horrific and gruesome that I've seen," said Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall, a 30-year veteran officer.
Plackowska is not an American citizen. She came to the U.S. 12 years ago from Poland, officials said. She also has an adult son.
Officers with the Naperville Police Department say some of them knew Olivia because she ended up in the wrong classroom the first day of kindergarten, and school officers helped find the girl and get her into the correct one.
"Several of our officers met Olivia at that time and on that day. Officers told she was such a sweet, loving, little girl," Chief Marshall said. Some of the officers who helped locate Olivia at school helped process the scene of her murder on Quin Court.
Olivia attended Brookdale School and Justin attended Scott School. Both schools are in Naperville.
Plackowski will appear in court next on November 21, 2012.
