Several volunteers with the Rock River Chapter are either on their way to the east coast or already there. Seven total local volunteers will be deployed.

Volunteers Vicky brown and Andy Thompson left for New York this morning to help out victims. There are more than 200 Red Cross shelters open and serving people displaced by the storm.

The Red Cross has even created a new volunteer position called a Generalist who will be used for whatever is needed.

Director of Fund Development Linda Parker says the need for Red Cross assistance is crucial.

Parker explains "we will go anywhere when there's a disaster taking place it doesn't have to be within our community, but it's within our nation and we feel it's important. It honors the mission of the Red Cross."

In order to donate $10 dollars to the American Red Cross text REDCROSS to 90999. Donations are also being accepted at the Rock River Chapter office located at 727 North Church Street. Rockford.

The Red Cross is also accepting donations at www.rockriver.redcross.org
