Springfield - The long-awaited plan to fix the state's $96 billion pension problem clears an early hurdle today.
A state house committee approved a proposal that would freeze cost-of-living increases and call for higher employee contributions. The plan emerged over a special weekend brainstorming session called by Gov. Pat Quinn (D).
The measure now moves to the floor, but it's not clear when it will be called for a vote.
