After tragedies like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary, many ask "what more can be done to protect children at school?", well over in Rock County, they think they have the answer.

Early Tuesday afternoon members of the Rock County Safe Schools Team gathered in the Rock County courthouse to renew their commitment to safer schools. Each member signed a pledge to signify their commitment.  "The first question everyone asks is can you do more? This is our answer, yes, we're trying" said Rock County District Attorney David O'Leary.

But some of their methods are a bit controversial. The presence of armed police officers in school buildings is off putting to some, and they're questioning whether their presence is necessary. "recent events answer that question. Is it necessary to have that presence there? Yes it is." said O'leary

And while the presence of these "resource officers" may be deemed necessary, O'Leary and other members of the team say the goal is to avoid anyone thinking schools are unsafe without them. Safety Coordinator for the Beloit School District Dan Stauffacher told us "it's a fine line you walk, but the parents and kids need to know they're safe!"
