Northern Illinois has a large number of Catholics, but when it comes to people who are devoutly religious, our state actually ranks below the national average.
Gallup asked Americans if they consider themselves "very religious". Nationwide, 40.1% of Americans said they were. In Illinois, that number dips to 38%.
Wisconsin chimed in with 36.7%. Mississippi was the most devout state. Vermont was the least devout.
