Two Belvidere Schools Could Be Closed Next Fall

Belvidere - More local schools are on the chopping block after the board rejects the administration's recommendation.

Both Perry and Kishwaukee elementary schools could be closed next school year.  The board says the state's dire finances require the district to make deeper cuts.  It's a plan many parents say leaves them feeling betrayed.  "The board went up there and pretty much shot everything down" says Carl Bertolany, whose son attends Belvidere High School."  "We're back to doing the cuts again and I think it was deceiving on their part."

But, the board sees it differently.  "I believe that we've got to do something sooner rather than later" says school board Vice President, Doug Smiley.  "The wolf's not at the door, but you can see him in the field."

Administrators will draft a new recommendation that will include new cuts.  They'll present it to the board in two weeks.
