Sunday's Fatal Accident Victim Identified

Three suspects who were burglarizing cars fled from police and caused an accident that left a woman dead.

Karen Shafer, 58, of Rockford was pronounced dead at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center shortly after crashing at the intersection of N. Alpine and Brendenwood Rd. 

Schafer worked at OSF Saint Anthony as an obstetrics nurse. 

A chase ensued after three men were scene attempting to break into cars in the Holy Family Parking lot.  They fled in a car south on Alpine and crashed into Shafer's car at Brendenwood Rd.

The incident remains under investigation.
