Sequester Deadline Could Hurt Local Law Enforcement Agencies

Time is running out for Congress to strike a deal on the federal budget. If they can't, agencies from non-profit to defense will face major cuts.

Locally, some law enforcement officials say it'll make it very difficult to upgrade their equipment or buy new police cars.  The so-called "Sequester" would put a major dent in Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey's plan to add 20 police officers.

For many departments across the state they say it could hinder their ability to fight crime.  "In our line of business it's so important that we keep current with computers, technology, and investigative equipment and if we don't have the necessary funds to buy this equipment, then in the long run the public will suffer" says Sangamon Co. Sheriff Neil Williamson.

The sequester deadline is Friday.
