President
Franklin D. Roosevelt
proclaimed March be dedicated to assisting the Red Cross nearly 70 years ago. The
Northwest Illinois Chapter is raising awareness by holding their annual Red Affair.
Freeport's Bocker Auto Group
is hosting the fundraiser tonight. The Northwest Illinois
and Rock River Chapters have respond to dozens of fires every year.
Organizers say it's not just national disasters that the Red
Cross responds to; they also provide blood donations, services to the armed
forces and safety education to the community.
Northwest Illinois Chapter Director Leslie Mastroianni
explains the importance of the Red Affair, "our funds, the funds that we
raise help us continue that work, and we don't receive any federal grant funds
or federal appropriation, so we operate strictly on what we raise."
