The Illinois political icon known as the "Straight Shooter" has died.

Dawn Clark Netsch loses her battle with ALS.  She died early this morning.  Netsch was the first woman to hold a constitutional office in Illinois, serving as a State Senator for 20 years.

She's also the first woman to run for Governor.  Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon (D) says in her eyes, Netsch is a hero.  "What stood out about Dawn is what she did about her passion she acted on it all the time" says Simon.  "She stood up for issues that other people were hesitant to stand up for."

Netsch also had a hand in writing up the state's current constitution.  She was 86 years old.
