DEKALB -- FBI Agents have converged on the NIU campus to execute search warrants. Agents could be seen taking boxes of documents from the campus Public Safety building. The campus police department has been rocked recently by allegations of misconduct in the investigation of a high-profile rape case involving one of its officers. Police Chief Donald Gray was fired after a judge determined he purposefully withheld evidence which would have exhonerated the officer. Grady is appealling his firing.
The FBI would only release the following statement.
"Special Agents and other personnel from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with agents and officers from federal and state law enforcement partners, are at the Northern Illinois University (NIU) campus today to execute a search warrant. The search warrant is associated with an ongoing criminal investigation being conducted by the FBI, Illinois State Police, U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General, and Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General. Today's activity is not in response to any public safety concerns, and during the execution of the warrant, the public safety functions of the NIU police department will continue uninterrupted.
No arrests have been made nor charges filed with respect to the investigation. Due to the ongoing nature of the matter, no additional information is available at this time."
We reached out to the FBI and they could not release any further information, saying only, "We are subject to Grand Jury secrecy."
WTVO/WQRF 'Eyewitness News' has a crew in route to the campus, and will have more details as they become available.
