An Illinois House committee has approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes. An 11-4 vote from the House Human Services Committee will send the proposal on to the full House.
The measure is intended for marijuana to be available to patients over the age of 18 with illnesses such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and HIV.
Supporters argue that marijuana can relive pain without the side effects caused by other drugs.
Opponents say that recreational users would abuse the measure.
