Springfield - State courts don't always do a good job of making sure FOID cards end up in the right hands. So, lawmakers are stepping in.
Certain gun offenses will now cost you $50. The money would go to funding a special class, so judges and clerks can better identify and report FOID applicants with a mental illness. "We want to have one consistent message" says Rep. Dennis Reboletti (R-46th). "One consistent piece of legislation to make sure that all the judges in 102 counties and circuit clerks understand the process so we can streamline it as quickly as possible."
An audit last year showed many cases where courts granted a FOID card to someone who wasn't qualified.
