Bagpipes, green beer and parades many Stateliners are gearing up to celebrate St. Patrick's Day including police.

Illinois State Police Captain Jeff Bain says "obviously if people are going to be out enjoying the weekend and drinking we urge them to partner with somebody that's sober and have a designated driver for the weekend."

Because St. Patty's Day falls on a weekend Captain Jeff Bain says state police will be doing roadside safety checks both Saturday and Sunday.  Cracking down on the 'fatal four'; DUI, distracted driving, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.

Police will also patrol every corner along Rockford's St. Patrick parade route Saturday, which Parade Director Jerry Goral says will happen rain or shine.

Goral explains "we have had it in blizzards, we have had it to the point where there may have been ten spectators on the whole parade route, yet we had the parade. I can recall years where my beard was full of ice and we still had the parade."

State police ask families heading to the parade to use caution and take their time.

Bain says "allow yourself enough time to get down there, park accordingly. I'm sure the city's going to be busy so just allow enough time to get there in time for the events.

And most importantly have a fun and a safe time. "In the past 35 years we have never ever had an incident," says Goral.

Rockford's parade starts Saturday at 3 P.M. The route begins at Harris Bank on Seventh Street, proceeds West on State Street and then North on Wyman. The parade ends near Beattie Park.
