Looking out for the younger generation, the state is considering passing bans on underage tanning and smoking on college campuses.
State colleges could soon become smoke-free zones. The idea is to promote a healthy learning environment. Critics say the rule would be very difficult to enforce. If it passes, the smoking ban would go into effect next summer.
The other ban relates to teens using tanning beds. A new proposal would make it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 from using a tanning bed passed out of the state house. Cities like Chicago and Springfield already have laws in place to prevent teens from using them. Supporters say tanning beds are dangerous for kids because it increases their risk of skin cancer.
